Why You Should Be Practicing Self-Care
Self-care is more than just a hot bubble bath at the end of a long day. While that is undoubtedly a great way to relax, you can practice self-care in many ways. Most people are under a lot of stress these days. From work, raising kids, navigating relationships, and household duties, we often find there is little time for anything else.
It is hard to not get caught up in all of life’s little distractions. Too often, we put our own personal health and priorities on the back burner as we try to take care of everyone and everything else. That may be fine for some time but can eventually take a toll on our mental health and well-being. Keep reading to find out not only why practicing self-care is important but a few tips on how you can do it.
It Helps Relieve The Pressure From Everyday Life
There are always a million things to do during a day. Work, cooking dinner, helping kids with homework, laundry, dusting — the list goes on and on. With so much to do in the day, it seems as if there is no time to relax. However, you don’t have to spend hours upon hours to practice self-care. Even if it is just 15 minutes before bedtime, you can unwind and relax your body and mind. Taking a small amount of time each day to relax is still a great way to practice self-care.
Not sure what you can do in 15 minutes to relax? Some of our favorite things to do in a short amount of time are:
- Pick up a book and read a few pages. You don’t even have to get through a whole chapter to get the relaxing feeling. It will be enough to relax your mind and help you de-stress from the busyness of your day. Plus, you’ll make progress in that book you have been meaning to finish!
- Feeling tense after a long day? Look up deep breathing exercises on YouTube as a way to unwind. Breathing exercises are a fantastic way to calm your mind and body down so that you can fall asleep quicker. Most take less than 10 minutes to complete!
It Gives Your Body The Energy To Get Through The Day
With so much going on in your life, you may be experiencing burnout. And while you may just fight through the burnout, your energy levels are more than likely not the same.
Practicing self-care is important to give your body what it needs to complete each day’s tasks. Self-care is more than just finding little ways throughout the day to relax. Here are some ways you can fuel your body to take care of it.
- Never underestimate the importance of a good, nutritious diet. While fueling up on junk food to get that boost of energy from sugar is easiest, it is not the best for long-term care. Instead of heading to the vending machine at work or to your snack drawer at home, it is just as easy to keep some fruit or vegetables handy to snack on. And for a great long-term boost, reach for foods that have protein! Protein is a great way to not only feel full throughout the day but will give your body the energy it needs to get through the day.
- This is easier said than done – but try to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night. Setting a bedtime each night that allows for this will help you to feel rested for the next day.
It Helps You Control Your Stress Levels At A Manageable Level
Life can easily make us feel stressed out. No matter what your self-care routine looks like, it can help you keep your anxiety and stress levels under control. Even if it is only for a few minutes a day, taking care of yourself in small ways can have a big impact on your life.
