What Does An EMDR Therapist Do?
New approaches to therapy are emerging all the time. As our society and world change, so do the issues we go through. With therapy, we can’t adapt to our client’s issues if we also aren’t changing how we approach them.
Throughout our lives, we all go through some complex situations. One of the most challenging experiences is definitely trauma. When we go through something that was emotionally scarring, it can carry on with us for the rest of our lives.
Trauma, or PTSD, is an emotional response to highly distressing situations. As a consequence of it, our emotions, thoughts, and life are forever changed as well.
Working through trauma is challenging and in some cases, a more integrated approach is needed. EMDR Therapy is a perfect example of this. But what exactly does an EMDR Therapist do?
EMDR Therapists Explained
What Is EMDR?
EMDR is short for Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing. It was originally founded in the 1980’s as a way to treat PTSD symptoms and trauma survivors. It uses evidence-based science techniques to provide long-term relief. Using guided bilateral eye movements, it helps the brain to reprocess the traumatic memory in a safe environment.
Who Can Practice EMDR?
Licensed therapists, if they choose, can implement EMDR into their therapy approaches. However, it is not enough to just be a licensed therapist to provide this type of service.
Due to EMDR being a highly complex service to understand, it is required that the therapist be trained and certified in EMDR. Without this certification, it is considered unethical to provide EMDR as an option for therapy.
What Are The Goals For EMDR Therapy?
The goal for any therapist is to help their clients feel supported and guided throughout their life’s journey.
One main goal for EMDR therapists is to help their clients process and manage their traumatic memories and the emotional and physical responses they have when remembering them.
A second goal is to provide healing. It’s not enough to just be able to process a traumatic memory. The work doesn’t end there. Because at the end of the day, trauma changes us in an inexplicable way. In order for healing to and personal growth to happen, we need to be able to look back at the past and not let it hold us back. It’s terrible, the things we have to go through throughout life.
Accepting trauma doesn’t mean you are suddenly ok with what happened to you. An EMDR therapist would never imagine trying to invalidate your experience. Because your experience does matter. Our goal is to just help you see that you are more than what happened to you. We want you to believe in the possibilities that you have and to show faith in yourself
What Does An EMDR Therapist Need To Know?
Whatever you want them to know. Our understanding of your story and past is important; but only if you are comfortable with sharing the details.
Safety for our clients is important so as EMDR therapists, we will never pry or pride for “more.”
The benefit of therapy is not for us – but for you. So whatever you are willing to share is a fantastic starting point.
