Tips For Preparing For The New Year
It’s hard to believe that another new year is upon us. After a challenging year full of surprises and more changes, we are definitely feeling grateful to be leaving this year behind. When a new year approaches, you commonly hear people asking, “What’s your new years resolution?” And while setting goals for yourself is always important, there can be so much more to a new year. You don’t even have to make a new years resolution to feel prepared for the new year. But short of that, what else is there?
How To Prepare For The New Year
Reflect on the previous one
One of our favorite ways to move into a new year is by reflecting on the previous one. It seems as if every year, we seem to forget all of the good and bad that happened to us in the last 12 months. To fully start fresh when the clock strikes midnight, you should never forget what you are leaving behind.
Maybe in the past year you learned some hard lessons about life. Or maybe you lost someone close to you or had some big life changes. Whatever happened to you, what did you learn from it? What did you gain from it? Putting these things into perspective will help you shed light on how you can use the past to make the future even better.
And don’t forget about everything you accomplished, last year, too! No matter how small or big it was, thinking about what you were able to achieve last year can help inspire you to continue forward and find new things to slay in the new year.
What are your goals?
We know, this sounds oddly similar to, “What’s your new years resolution?”
We aren’t just talking about the short-term ones such as going to the gym more or eating healthier. Instead, what are your long term goals? Is it going back to school? Starting a new career? Picking up a hobby you’ve always wanted to try? By the end of this new year, what do you want to look back on and say, “I actually did it, I completed that goal!”
Setting your short and long-term goals now is a great way to begin mapping out the steps you need to take to get there. You can also set smaller goals that lead up to the big one. By setting smaller goals and hitting them one at a time, you can help yourself stay motivated through the whole year of reaching that large goal.
Out With The Old
The end of the year is one of our favorite times to declutter our homes. Whether you have children at home with a lot of toys they haven’t used, or it’s just you and/or your partner, you can use this time to clear out the old.
Clearing out everything old and donating it – whether that is toys, clothes, shoes, books, or whatever – can help you in several ways. It helps you become more organized, create less clutter, donate to good causes, and it can help your mental health. Many people say that a cluttered space can worsen symptoms of anxiety or depression. All in all, it’s a win!
Re-Decorate
If you haven’t changed your surroundings up in awhile, why not use this time to do that? Once the holiday decorations are down and packed away, really take time to look around at your decorations. Spend an afternoon and take inventory of some things that could be replaced or upgraded. Keeping your surroundings fresh and new every once in awhile can help your mental health by giving your mind new things to enjoy and look forward to after a long day of work.
