How To Stop Comparing Yourself to Others to Live a More Authentic, Confident Life

It’s human nature to compare ourselves to others. It’s common to pick apart our own shortcomings when compared to somebody else. Some comparisons can inspire change within ourselves, but most often, it just makes us see our flaws.

There are ways that you can stop comparing yourself to others so that you can see your worth.

Here are four ways to stop comparing yourself so you can live a more authentic and confident life.

Learn To Be Your Own Best Friend

“Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable. I didn’t have to become perfect because I’ve learned throughout my journey that perfection is the enemy of greatness.” – Janelle Monae

The hardest part about becoming your own best friend is to learn how to talk positively to yourself. If you have ever tried to look at yourself in the mirror and say something kind and ended up feeling embarrassed, you were not alone. It is hard to talk to yourself in a gentle, loving manner. The journey to exhibiting love towards yourself often starts from the inside.

Learning to be your own best friend means you know something is weighing you down and want to change it. Showing grace towards yourself lets you put your emotional and mental health first.

Keep a Record of Achievements

We often compare ourselves to the accomplishments and strengths of other people. Instead of concentrating on the success of someone else, focus on yours.

It helps to focus on your own accomplishments if you write it down. They don’t even have to be anything huge. Making a list of your successes will serve as a reminder to yourself that you are succeeding too but in your ways.

As long as it is meaningful to you, that’s all that counts. Here are some samples of what you can jot down:

“I wanted to stay in bed today, but I found the willpower to wake up.”

“I was able to save money this week instead of spending it.”

“I cooked dinner for myself instead of eating out.”

When you see all the little ways you are making progress, your self-esteem will rise.

Practice Self-care

Self-care does not always have to be wine and a hot bath. Self-care can be an internal reflection and figuring out how to make future changes. It can be as simple as looking at the accomplishments you wrote down and how you can keep improving.

Another way to feel better about yourself is to write down what you are grateful for each day. You can also try to list 5 to 10 things that you do like about yourself.

These simple, self-reflective practices have been proven to automatically boost negative moods and thinking.

Be Proactive

When you start to feel like you’re in a self-comparison spiral, repeat those steps. There are ways to prevent yourself from falling too deep into the rabbit hole again. While it is easy to forget the inner strength you do have.

Don’t allow yourself to fall too deep into that rabbit hole again. It can be incredibly easy to forget the strengths that you have within yourself already. Sometimes it’s hard to believe in better days, and in trusting that your struggle will cease.

By journaling, practicing self-care, and showing kindness to yourself, you will give yourself the reminder that you are worthy despite what your inner voice says. There is always time to accomplish more. Life is not a race to see who can accomplish the most.

At your very core, lies the strength, persistence, and confidence you need to continue. So, when you start to feel like you are heading down a spiral, it’s time to reflect and conquer.
